Sailing on Monterey BayThe Boating Education Program at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) offers a variety of boating opportunities on vessels ranging from kayaks to yachts.

The Boating Center staff would like to extend an invitation to you and your family to take advantage of one of our many boating activities, by joining one of our adult or youth classes. Come sail the Monterey Bay aboard one of our sailboats and experience the beautiful Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Paddle one of our kayaks past historic Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium or up the Elkhorn Slough to observe some of the finest marine mammal and wildlife observations on the West Coast.

We offer programs to suit all ability levels, ages and levels of interest, including youth programs featuring Youth Extreme Sailing, Kayaking and Surf Camps, as well as adult ASA certification or non-certification courses. Our courses are available for the local and campus community so that anyone with a desire to experience the marine environment may do so in a safe and educational manner. Our knowledgeable staff can assist you through courses ranging from introductory to highly technical.

Select one of the many courses offered and experience the beautiful Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary by sail or paddle. Otters, seals and sea lions lounge in the near-shore waters, while farther out whales can be seen blowing and arching their flukes. Whether kayaking along the shore or blue-water sailing on the bay, come experience the unique Monterey Bay with the CSUMB boating program.

California Deparment of Boating and WaterwaysThe Foundation of CSUMB Boating Program is a nonprofit organization funded in part by the California Department of Boating and Waterways, which allocates funds for boating facilities, boating safety education and boating law enforcement throughout California. The Boating Center equipment inventory is funded by the Department to enhance boating safety education in the Monterey Bay.

The romantic notion of sailing is as true today as it has been throughout maritime history. Out on the water, in harmony with the natural forces, sailing can be many different things to a large universe of different types of people. It can be exciting, invigorating, relaxing, challenging, physically difficult or undertaken with minimum physical strength required. Sailing can be competitive or relaxed, exacting or slow paced. Sailing can be enjoyed by people of all ages and physical conditions, and is a sport that always offers more to learn and more to enjoy.
