Sea otters and sailing on Monterey Bay

Keelboat Courses

Your instruction begins with classroom sessions and proceeds to on-the-water practice. A student teacher ratio of no more than 4 students per instructor assures you plenty of individualized attention and on-the-water experience.

Non-Certification Courses

Introductory Sailing

Dreaming about sailing away? Experience the thrill of the ocean in an introductory sail on the beautiful Monterey Bay. This course with a certified instructor is designed to give the interested sailor an opportunity to explore the world of sailing. It gives exposure to steering, trimming sail, tacking and jibing, and getting a sense of what sailing is all about. This non-certification sail allows participants to taste the excitement of sailing. Help with sail raising and trim, take a turn steering, learn the language, and taste the salt air. All skill levels welcome. $30/ hour/ person, minimum 2 hours per session. Dinghy sailing available upon request.

Adaptive Sailing

We will teach you sailing basics at whatever level you choose, from enjoying the pleasures of being on the sea with an instructor to independent sailing at your level of accomplishment. The unique configuration of our Martin 16 sailboat makes this boat especially accessible to people with special needs. With a deep ballasted keel and simple control systems, the Martin 16 is a safe daysailer for sailors of all abilities.

Executive Education and Team Training

Executive Education and Team Training is an adventure-based learning program co-coached by CSUMB captains, team building facilitators, and CSUMB student assistants. Participants gain hands-on sailing experience while developing leadership, teamwork, risk management, and communication skills. This powerful and dramatic approach to executive and team training has been used successfully by many Fortune 500 Companies. Each team member learns to chart a course, hoist the sails, get underway, trim as a crew, and take the helm. Our facilitators aid the transfer of benefits back to the workplace. Come aboard and discover a fantastic, fun means of developing your team.

Boat Options for Executive Education and Team Training:

  • Flying Juniors--Our fleet of two-person boats require fast thinking and teamwork to stay dry! Leadership and team interdependence are keenly developed in a competitive atmosphere. Flying Juniors are simply rigged and are easy to master for a day of fun.

  • Keel Boats--A longtime favorite of team trainers, 20-30 ft. keel boats allow four to six person crews to develop as a team where delegation and communication are key. We end the session with a fun regatta.

  • Kayaks - With our 1 and 2 person kayaks, teams can travel along the shoreline of the Monterey Bay marine sanctuary, or through the Elkhorn Slough, a haven for the wildlife enthusiast.
